How We Listen

Or how we don't - we listen to fix or listen to diagnose or don't really listen at all. That might be OK if we're talking about gardening, but not suicide. It's damaging and sometimes deadly.

How We Talk

The cheerleading and positive vibes too often include empty platitudes, unsolicited advice and useless memes. No language policing here, but is this helping?

How We Care

Good intentions matter, but the systems in place, and many of us in positions of support, seem to care more about managing and controlling and less about understanding and connection.

What if prevention

not only focused on crisis hotlines, psych units and risk assessment checklists but also included how we too often...

Prevent Honesty

We silence people in pain, that's what most of us do. We say we want to hear their truth - their story - but we don't. It's scary or uncomfortable or inconvenient. That's a problem.

Prevent Safety

Silencing and stigmatizing and shaming and fixing and all of that b.s. doesn't feel so safe. In fact, it feels dangerous. The struggle to survive is really hard. This isn't helping.

Prevent Agency

Treating people who are in pain like they are less than, or like they are felons, is not only ineffective, it's immoral. Giving them some agency is not. That simple.

My best friend ended his life years ago and I have struggled with suicidal ideation for decades. I started this podcast because there was nowhere to talk openly and honestly about any of this, which sucked, and there was nowhere to hear people talking about this, which also sucked. I knew there were others out there like me, living in what I call the space between.

So one summer day in 2020 I sat my ass down at my little kitchen table in Chapel Hill, NC, and started it. These conversations have changed my life and I hope even in some small way, they change your life, too.
